meet our sport & exercise medicine physician team
Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) physicians at Reactivate are Family Physicians who have advanced training in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic injuries and illness as they pertain to participation in an active, healthy lifestyle.
More than just expert musculoskeletal assessment, Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) Physicians have received advanced training that provides them with the knowledge and expertise to assess acute and chronic musculoskeletal and movement-related (not just sport related) injuries and illnesses. This could include management of fractures and dislocations, education and management of concussion, tendon and ligament injuries, joint and soft tissue injections, assessment for pre-participation fitness for an activity, or return to play/sport when recovering from an injury.
One of the key defining features of an SEM Physician is that they can work with the patient to more clearly identify the underlying problem. The foundation of sport and exercise-based injury management begins with establishing a specific diagnosis for the problem. This may be accomplished with an enhanced musculoskeletal, neurologic, metabolic, and cardiorespiratory physical examination to narrow down the diagnosis. The diagnosis may be further clarified, if required, with imaging that may include x-ray, ultrasound, CT scan or an MRI depending on the potential diagnoses.
After a diagnosis is clarified, then the SEM Physician can formulate a treatment plan that could include a movement-based exercise prescription, along with collaborative rehabilitation with allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and registered massage therapy. Only as a team that has a clear diagnosis from which to work with, will the patient be able to identify, progress through rehabilitation efficiently and effectively, and resolve their issue so that they can go back to enjoying life and everything it has to offer.
